The seat belt was invented in the 1800's by Sir George Cayley, a wealthy English landowner who devoted his life to inventing. He was the most influential theorist in the development of fixed-wing aviation - in effect, he invented the aeroplane, which in itself inspired the idea of the seatbelt - and also created what is now known as the tank track, although he designed it for use with horse drawn agricultural vehicles on his muddy lad in North Yorkshire.
Cayley never patented his seatbelt and in 1885 a American called Edward J Claghorn stole the idea and patented it for himself.
