The Shrine of Remembrance was built as a memorial to the men and women who served in the First World War. These veterans were buried far from their native homeland at the times when most Australians did not travel, and it served as a place where individuals, families and communities could honor the memories of those they lost.
Two capital cities in Australia have a Shrine of Remembrance: Melbourne(Capital of Victoria) and Brisbane(Capital of Queensland). These should not be confused with the war memorial at Canberra(Capital of Australia).
