It was after the house burned in the War of 1812. When it was repaired it was painted white to cover the burn marks. In the 1800's paint was very expensive so buildings were not painted, so when the president's house was painted white everyone began to refer to it as the "White House ". The name stuck and so we still call it that. By-the-way when they did some work on it a few years ago they found the burn marks still on the house from1812.
