Nigeria comprises of several large states each with their own indigenous peoples, cultures and langaues. The thinking behind Abuja as a capital was to create a new state and new capital (in the centre of the country) so that none of the states felt marginalized or better than another. Additionally Abuja was basically built from nothing and the infrastructre planned - and still has by far the best infrastructure in the country
