Although it originally applied to a family of insects (wasps), the term "cryptid" to mean an unclassified animal organism was first used by John E. Wall in a 1983 letter to the International Society of Cryptozoology newsletter. The word was soon in wide use to mean a mythical or legendary creature that might actually exist in some form.
The word is from the same root as "cryptic" meaning hidden or secret. The word "cryptid" is used to describe an animal or creature that has been reported by observers but not scientifically shown to exist.
