When Adam was created God breathed into him the breath of life. In other words he put into Adam his spirit body, which was in the exact likeness of Adams physical body. That same spirit with all of its memories of this life, with all of its knowledge will return to that same God who gave it life.

We do not fully understand how God works, but let it suffice that Adam and Eve were our first parents. The how's and why's are of little importance, it is what we do with our lives that should be uppermost in our mind.

In some philosophies, notably those that have matured from the Greek disciplines, the mind is divided according to its spiritual and physical faculties. The intelligence and the will are spiritual faculties, those that involve consciousness, understanding, choice and concepts. The imagination, memory or sensory faculties are physical faculties and die with the body. During life the physical faculties serve as the gateways to the spiritual faculties, they provide the material that the spiritual faculties must sift through in order to choose appropriate action. The memory and imagination allow learning to take place as well as complex problem solving, in essence, they present things to the understanding and the understanding uses them as a research and development for ideas and problem solving, in essence, learning. As well, they allow the understanding to predict and remember causality, that is, the mind can anticipate the consequences of actions thanks to previous experience or project it based on an educated guess. This differentiates humans from other animals, which have memory and imagination and even limited understanding, but which lack the true understanding of causality and their place in it, i.e. responsibility and the concept of good and evil effects. At death, this changes. In this philosophical system, death is an act of violence undergone by human nature, as the spiritual and physical faculties were never intended to be separated. The deceased is not properly human anymore but exists in a state of hylemorphic separation (the informing essence separated from its proper matter). What does this mean? It means that at death all the physical things with which you interacted and stored, your memories, your imaginings, all emotions and sensations experienced via the faculties of the physical body will be lost. Spiritual faculties, because they have no parts, cannot break down and will remain, unified by their particular existential stasis ("sealed" in existence through the fact of existing as an individual spiritual entity). Thus this remnant or "soul" will retain all the conceptual knowledge gained throughout life. For example, you will understand you had a mother and what a mother is, but due to the absence of your physical brain, you will be unable to "remember" what she looked like, any smells associated with her, etc., all experimental knowledge will be lost. You will understand happiness, but will not be able to feel its thrill outside of an intellectual satisfaction. In this state, since the soul has no ability to receive new information - for it has no way to experience anything; it has no senses to register anything, not even the passage of time - the soul is essentially sealed off from everything except itself and for all purposes it exists outside of time and space. Interesting to note, Christian philosophers point to the resurrection of the body as the reunion of the physical and spiritual faculties, thus reuniting one's universal concepts (to return to the example; you know what "mother" is/means) with particular manifestations (the particular image of your mother).
