The people in the three counties that formed Kentucky wanted to separate from Virginia for several reasons. First, traveling to the state capital was long and dangerous. Second, when they were attacked by Native Americans, they needed the authorization of the Gogernor of Virginia to use the militia. Lastly, Virginia refused to recognize the importance of trade along the Mississippi River to Kentucky's economy. Trade with New Orleans, which controlled the mouth of the Mississippi, was forbidden.
