The earliest documented use of a 'hand cannon' (which would be something of a predecessor to today's man portable firearms) was the battle of Ain Jalut in 1260. However, the specific size of the hand cannons in use is unknown, and it is possible no examples were used which were comparable in size to what one would consider a pistol.
