Tanks were invented and introduced in battle during WWI in the year 1916. It got the term tank because the French wanted the Germans to believe that it was used to carry water.
Tanks were invented in 1916 by Britain, they were invented because of Trench Warfare, but tanks had limited use in WWI because they often broke down.
After the start of WWI, the British and French both began building Tanks. In Britain the most significant figures were Sir Eustace Tennyson d'Eyncourt, Major Ernest Swinton, and Willliam Tritton. It was Swinton and Tritton who jointly designed and built the prototype that became the Tank Mark I. In France, the likeliest candidate is Colonel J.B.E. Estienne, who had plans drawn up and persuaded the military to build them. The French and British projects were neck-and-neck, beginning in 1915, although it was the British who first used Tanks on the battlefield.
The battle tank was used by the British in WW1. It was produced in 1915, however, it needed many refinements to make it a strong war weapon.
WW1.
Before the tanks arrived there was a stalemate in the warfare. Both sides had dug themselves (trenches)and in were in strong defensive positions. Thus when Lancelot de Mole (an Australian inventor) invented the tank, the British were able to break through the lines of the enemy and their trenches became useless in the face of the tanks (the heavybarbed wirewas easily overcome with the might of the tanks) . Once the tanks had overcome the defenses and cause panic and mayhem in the enemy lines it became easy for the infantry to move in.
The invention and use of tanks. Before tanks were introduced, much of the action on the western front was bogged down in trench warfare where progress over months was measured in yards. Tanks allowed armies to make real progress and break the stalemate of trench warfare.

World War I was the first major war to be fought after the invention of machine guns, tanks and aircraft. It saw the introduction of weaponry that would define warfare for the next century.
The infantrymen benefited most from tanks. Tanks and Artillery support the infantrymen.
Tanks were a naval invention, created by the British Admiralty. They were called LANDSHIPs when first introduced.

The invention of the tanks and the coming of the US reinforcements.

tanks, long range artillery , planes, machine guns, flame throweres, poison gas
Tanks were invented in WWI and they were designed to breach entrenched positions. Before the invention of tanks there was nothing that could fill this role. In a more strategic sense, they offered some of the same advantages that cavalry traditionally provided. Although the first tanks were slow, they soon became fast compared to a foot soldier. This combination of speed and power allowed them to punch a hole in the enemy's defenses and continue attacking.
Ballast used to be stones. With the invention of the electric pump, I think most ships will actually pump water into and out of tanks to adjust their ballast now.
They as in Allies of Axis? Both sides had pros and cons, but the Germans started off well with the invention of the machine gun and advanced tanks.
If by "solution for trench warfare", you mean a way to end trench warfare, then the invention and widescale use of tanks, bombers and the Blitzkrieg in WWII solved trench warfare.
The Tank was a completely new invention. It was a form of moving castle, totally unstoppable initially. But it was very, very slow & mechanically unreliable. Noisy & very uncomfortable for the crew.
