The "Golan Heights" was seized during the 1967 Six Days War, to provide a demilitarized buffer zone between Israeli civilian areas and a belligerent Syria. But Israel stopped short of seizing Damascus.

The Sinai peninsula was first seized in 1956 and returned to Egypt in 1957 to appease American interests and secure an Armistice with Egypt. It was seized again during the 1967 Six Days War, to provide a demilitarized buffer zone between Israeli civilian areas and a belligerent Egypt. Israel stopped short of seizing Cairo, and returned the Sinai to Egypt under the terms of the 1979 Peace Treaty with Egypt.
