Food riots will begin in the US when the US no longer ships food to other nations and it becomes so scarce across the country that those in communities like Beverly Hills, Miami Beach, Marco and Galveston Islands, and midtown Manhattan begin to go without. Probably not before.

The South experienced minor rioting due to food shortages and the North had riots because of the North's 1863 conscription laws. No one was killed in the Southern riots but in New York City in July of 1863, the riots were deadly. Mobs of rioters lynched Freed Blacks and burned down buildings. It was the largest civil insurrection in US history. As an example of how deadly the riots were, President Lincoln had to send 20,000 troops from Gettysburg with howitzers to end the riots.

After the bread riots in Richmond in April of 1863, similar food shortage disturbances followed in Atlanta, Columbus, and Mobile, Alabama to name just a few places where citizens experienced food shortages. These problems were mostly in the East. The irony of them was that in the South's agricultural economy, the Confederate government was able to supply its armies, but not all of its people.
