If it looses or gains heat. A simple example for you.

If you leave an ice-cube over a period of time outside , what will you observe. Yes, the ice-cube will melt. This is because the ice-cube gained heat from its surrondings and after sometime it becomes pure water. Isn't this called a change of state? ;)
