In 2011, the Perseids will peak on 12-13 August. Viewing of meteors is always better
after local midnight. Unfortunately, fainter meteors will be wiped out by the moon, which
will be full on the 13th.

Perhaps you are thinking of the Perseid Meteor Shower which is active in mid-August. It is visible all across the Northern Hemisphere.
The peak is on the 12th of August, but you will see them on the nights for at least a week before and after that, but not as many as on the peak night.
That's not how meteor showers work. They don't "hit" specific places; they're visible pretty much everywhere the sky is dark. Tonight (August 13, 2011) is near the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.
The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs in August. The Leonid Meteor Shower occurs in November.
The peak time will be the night of Thursday, August 12 and the early morning of Friday, August 13. Starting about 3 days ago, for another 6 or 7 days. The best time is from about 2 AM to dawn. For most meteor showers, it doesn't matter where you are; from 2AM to dawn.
The Perseid meteor shower peaks from about midnight August 12 in the northern hemisphere. One of best of the year. Look towards the northeast. These cannot really be seen in the Southern hemisphere though some will pop up above the northern horizon.
