I actually haven't heard of any overheating problem. I've had mine for two years sitting next to (about a foot away from) my heating vent and it has never overheated. If your worried there are also external fans you can buy for ~$20.
The PS3 slim has less of a problem overheating as it consumes less power
playstation 3 is better because it has free internet,better graphics, and it doesn't have an 80% chance of overheating and then a 40% chance of your second one overheating.

In order to prevent a PlayStation 3 from overheating you should make sure that the ps3 is in an open area so that there is an air flow to move the hot air which is released. You can also buy a specialy fan which will help to move the hot air. Another thing that you could do is to not but your ps3 on a cloth surface.
