Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79
Many times, including AD 79 and AD 1944 (my father saw that one).
Mt. Vesuvius's first recorded eruption was in 79AD which destroyed Pompeii and the last 1944.
Pressure had built up sufficiently for it to erupt, as it has done many times in history, as do most volcanoes. Nobody can predict exactly when a volcano will erupt, but we are getting better at seeing the signs of probably imminent eruption.
they errupt
== ==
Inactive volcanoes are unlikely to errupt,however there is no guarantee that they won't errupt . Also called dormant volcanoes.
