Far more people would have died in our efforts to defeat Japan. The country would have been blockaided until the Emperor surrendered, the Allies would have continued to use conventional bombs on the large cities, and when the Allies finally DID invade Japan, many Allied soldiers would have died. It was a difficult decision for the president to use that device, and although it seems evil now, there weren't many alternatives. * A third bomb would have been ready in less than a week and a fourth was being manufactured.
Did the US have a third bomb available in World War 2?
No. The test device detonated in July and the two dropped on Japan exhausted the available fissile uranium. Work was continuing around the clock at Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Hanford, Washington to refine more, but it would have been several months before another operational bomb was ready.

It wasn't. The atom bomb was develped too late to use on Germany, so was used only on Japan. Had it been ready six months earlier, no doubt Dresden or somewhere would have got the benefit of it.

Had not Japan already surrendered, it might have been 3 to 5 days to arrive on Tinian and it would have been dropped 1 to 2 days later. Say from August 22, 1945 to August 25, 1945. Instead the bomb was returned to Los Alamos. (perhaps it became one of the 1946 Operation Crossroads devices at Bikini Atoll, but I couldn't verify that). Another 3 atomic bombs were scheduled in September. Another 3 atomic bombs were scheduled in October. Another 7 atomic bombs were scheduled in November.
