What roles do written symbols have in critical thinking?

The role it has, is the simple fact that without a life long of learning and critical thinking we would be unable to decipher what a written symbol was "symbolic" for. It is through our critical thinking that we have learned such things as the person "walking" lit up white on the cross walk, means we can cross the street and the orange guy standing means dont walk. It is also a directive to the men and women's restroom as well as no u-turns, no left turns on red. etc.

How does illogical thinking interfere with critical thinking?

If by critical thinking you mean rational thinking, then illogical thinking is it's opposite and excludes it of necessity. If instead you simply mean "thinking that is effective", then illogical thinking interferes only insofar as rational thinking is effective. Our society holds up rational analysis as an ideal, but in some situations intuitive, seemingly illogical thought produces better results. Critical thinking is sequential. Each stage or step of the thought process must be analyzed and found to be correct before moving on to the next step and the next step. And so on toward a purposeful end. This is a structured process. For example: "If A then B, if B then C, if C then D." If each step is reasoned and correct then also: "if A then D follows." Illogical thinking would interfere with the sequence somewhere, interfering and breaking the chain. For example: "If A then B, if B then K, if C then D." There's no link from B to C, interfering with the sequence.

When evaluating articles, critical thinking involves checking sources, verifying information, and analyzing the author's bias to determine credibility. For advertising, critical thinking means questioning persuasive tactics and claims made, researching product information independently, and considering potential hidden agendas. In the media, critical thinking involves analyzing multiple sources, understanding potential biases or sensationalism, and verifying the accuracy of the information presented. What type of thinking that involves Evidence That Can Separate True Science From False Science?

Critical thinking is the answer. We would also accept skeptical thinking. Science involves 3 things. Making a testable hypothesis, testing it, and evaluating it. Any time you can do those three things in a repeatable fashion (ie I can tell you how to do what I did and it works for you too) you have 'done true science'. False science provides an un-testable hypothesis, then tries to 'prove' it using misdirection, insinuation, or bad testing procedures.

What are the disadvantages of critical thinking?

For the individual there dangers from those in authority, your critical thinking could undermine that authority which could have many repercussions on an individual. Outside of these matters critical thinking should be cultivated, any conclusions drawn must be examined, tested and proven valid or otherwise. Sometimes people get caught up in the sequential nature of critical thinking and exclude other forms of thinking, such as creative thinking or intuitive thinking. This would be a disadvantage, since creative thinking, for example, tends to produce innovation and invention.

Why and how could you apply critical thinking when evaluating articles advertisingmedia and conversations?

Applying Critical Thinking! What a wonderful thing that we humans have the capacity to apply critical thinking when we make choices. And what a shame that we so rarely use our capacity to make good choices. Is it because the advertizing media is so convincing? Is it because we are lazy? Or is it because critical thinking is such a complicated undertaking? I would think it is all three. We do not apply our thinking because it is easier to follow someone else's decision. For thinking takes effort. Logical thinking, evaluating the pros and cons when making a decision, is both a complicated and lengthy effort. It implies that we have to separate the choices we make from our personal predilection and, by weighing the pros and cons, must base them solely on the predictable or hoped-for outcome. For example when we buy a car, we should make a decision based on price (not payments), on fuel ecomomy in the city (we seldom use it exclusively on highways), and size (we do not need an SUV when we are a two-person family). There are probably more considerations that I have not touched on. I will usually suggest that you apply critical thinking to any major purchase like a car or a home. As far as conversations are concerned, if you are with friends, mistakes bear few consequences, especially if you are among friends who will correct your thinking without being demeaning.
