Though not worn quite so much these days, a kimono (worn by a girl) or an obi (worn by a guy) would be most appropriate on national holidays, especially on Girl's Day (aka the Doll Festival), and Children's Day. You may also wear one if you were to work at a restaurant where they still wear and serve traditional clothing and foods, in the form of a geisha.

You have to wear a kimono in Japanese or Chinese festivities. Like going to the Japanese Art Festival. If you don't wear kimono, in their cultures its 2 years bad luck.
