What he probably means is that he loved her but she did not love him in return so he ended the relationship. "In love with" implies that the two are in it together, not a one sided deal. If this bothers you, talk to him if necessary. Mostly, you need to realize that people have an emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual past and you need to either accept that past or find someone with a past you can accept.
