The musical had its Japanese premiere on 17 June, 1987 at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo. The Toho Organisation had purchased special rights to the original production that allowed them to stage it within the country, and the show played in repertory and toured to various Japanese cities from 1987-2012. The premiere, 1987 cast did not release an official cast recording; however, there was a promotional single released featuring a couple of songs. Few have ever listened to it and is exceedingly rare. In 1994, the 10th Japanese engagement of the musical took place in Nagoya at the Chunichi Theatre. It was during this engagement that an official cast recording was finally recorded and released. Actually, it spawned 2 separate cast recordings featuring two different Japanese casts that alternated in the roles on stage. The recordings were made live through the theatre's soundboard and they are nicknamed the Japanese "Blue" and "Red" cast recordings. They contain nearly the entire score, all sung entirely in Japanese. They are available by searching the internet for retailers that carry foreign cast albums such or on ebay. Additionally, the Japanese recorded and released 4 additional cast recordings of their production of Les Miserables in 2003. Nicknamed the "Orange," "Violet," "Green," and "Light Blue" cast albums, they also each feature a different cast and are slightly shorter than the previous "Blue" and "Red" albums, which has to do with official cuts made to the show since in London and on Broadway. So, in all, 6 official Japanese language cast recordings and 1 promotional single of Les Miserables have been released, and all can still be purchased today if one knows how to research the internet well, with the exception of the single, which remains elusive. Good luck.
