American troops, both blacks and whites (segregated) were camped at or near Langstone, Newport. As a kid of about eleven, I, with my cousin, not only paid them a visit but were allowed into the camp. We came away with the cigarettes, chocolate, and so on we went there for. My cousin also came away with a fresh set of American Army fatigues, to replace his own clothes, which had become mightily fouled when he rode his bike into a pit, full of kitchen swill!

Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co sold guns with the Newport name as early as the 1880s, but a hammerless Newport double would have been made by either Crescent between 1903 and 1930 or Stevens after that. The HSB trade names were discontinued during or shortly after World War 2.
