All current Australian banknotes are made from a polymer compound and feature holographic windows and other gadgetry to foil counterfeiting.

The introduction of Australian polymer banknotes commenced in 1988 with a trial Ten Dollar (Bicentennial) note, which proved to be a disappointment due to the fact that they fell to pieces rather quickly.

After the process was revised and improved, the new polymer Five Dollar notes were introduced in 1992 and the One Hundred Dollar note, the last in the range, was introduced in 1996, completing the transition.

Polymer banknotes are recyclable, cheaper to produce, more difficult to counterfeit, and are more durable and longer lasting than paper banknotes.
