Situated in the Kiamichi-Ouachita Mountain region of southeastern Oklahoma, the McCurtain County Wilderness Area is the last sizable expanse of old growth oak/shortleaf

pine forest in the nation. The Wilderness Area is located 25 miles north of Broken Bow and 8 miles east of US 259. A billboard-sized Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation sign is evident from the highway, marking the turn-off to the east. After turning, smaller directional signs lead the way 8 miles over graded roads to the west entrance of the wilderness area. A small parking lot is situated within a quarter-mile past the west entrance. Visitors may park here and hike the mile-long nature trail which is open all year. The trail winds through upland and bottomland forest down to Panther Branch and Waterthrush Creek. These drainages shortly flow into Broken Bow Reservoir, creating an ecotone of several habitats and hot spots for finding birds characteristic of each habitat type. Visitors may enter from the west and leave their vehicles at the nature trail parking lot between the area entrance and the manager's headquarters. From this point, they may explore the primitive west side ridges and slopes along the nature trail or, under the direction of the area manager, travel across a narrow channel of Broken Bow Reservoir to the rugged east side.

Many other trails in Beavers Bend Park up to the connecting David Boren trail of 12.5 miles (one way). David Boren Hiking Trail (DBHT) - 12 mile one-way, marked with white spots on trails. Well defined and is mostly 1 person width. There are four sections to the trail where you can park and start hiking. The Skyline Trail (6 miles) is a nice section of forestry and you go up and down and up and down and up and down. It's a scenic trail and good conditioning for elevation training. It's a good park to take the family to as there are many activities.
