Software installed under the operating system Windows XP is usually installed into it's own named sub-directory under \program files
So if you are installing on the C drive it would appear at c:\program files\new software here.
In just about any case the program should be telling if not first asking where you would like to install the software. Although there are other directories that a program may have information/files stored such as the documents and settings sub-directory.
