The storyboards for a film are not so much written as they are drawn. Usually, storyboards depict key scenes from the camera's point of view. It is not necessary that a script be written or completed before storyboards can be drawn.

Animatics are a series of "storyboards," displayed in sequence and nearly always accompanied by a rough dialogue sound track, usually recorded using the voices of the artists who drew the storyboards as well as other people involved in the production of the movie/ad/cartoon/etc. Its purpose is to provide a way for the animators and director to workout any problems with the screenplay, determine camera positions, timing, and so on.
