The everglades act as a flushing system for the Okeechobee river. Which is a massive river to the north. The everglades act as an overflow to the river so it doesn't overflow. It also receives rotting vegetation which in returns gives the the everglades extremely fertile black soil. The job of a wetlands is to prevent flooding. If something were to happen to the everglades, for example an oil spill were to damage it. There would be massive flooding.
