The metacarpal bones connect the carpal bones of the "wrist" to the phalanges of the paw. If you start from the rounded portion of the shoulder by the backbone, this is the scapula. Trace down and slightly forward to the pointy bit at the chest - this is the shoulder joint. Trace down and noticeably back to the point of the elbow - this is the connection between the humerus and the radius/ulna. Trace down again to the next joint and you are at the wrist (which is usually called the knee in dogs because it bends like a human's knee). These are the carpal bones in the knee joint. The next long bones down in the front leg are the metacarpal bones.
