Metal is located throughout the Periodic Table. The periodic table is based on atomic weight. Metals range from some of the lightest to the heaviest of elements.
On the periodic table the elements are called groups.

The transition metals are located in groups 3 - 12 on the Periodic Table.
This is the group 1, the alkali metals.
Nonmetals are located on the right side of the periodic table. Hydrogen is the only nonmetal that can be on the left side of the periodic table.

Group 18.
On the periodic table the elements are called groups.
Hydrogen is the element which is not alkaline metal but in the top of the periodic table. It is depicted in the 1st group because it has 1 valence electron. It is a non metal.

This element is francium in the first group of periodic table.
They are organized by atomic number (the number of protons/electrons in the element).
