On all Sunfires, the plugs are in a row across the front of the engine. Yours
may or may not have a cover or shroud to remove to access them. I think the
GT's do for sure. If it's not obvious, look for the 4 plug wires (long, usually black, and
about as thick as a ball point pen) coming from the coil
packs and follow them to the plugs.
Carefully pull the plug wires off ONE AT A TIME SO ONE, AND ONLY ONE, WIRE IS
DISCONNECTED! (this is to avoid mixing them up. If you
have only one wire to replace, you can't get it on the wrong plug)
Remove each plug with ratchet wrench. They may be real tight, but firm
steady pressure on the wrench should break them loose. (remember, Lefty Loosie, Righty Tighty. Or if you prefer, counter clockwise to remove, clockwise to replace, as viewed from the top of the plug)
If you think you're going to damage the plug or it's seat in the engine because it's just too tight, Spray some WD-40 around the base of the plug and wait awhile. Then try again.
Make sure to gap the new plugs before you install them. The auto parts guy can tell you A) what the gap is B)what the proper gap distance is, and he will probably gap them for you.
Installation is the reverse. I put a bit of clean motor oil on the threads
of the new plugs to help keep them from becoming impossible to remove. Also, most cars want the little cap on the non threaded end of the plug removed.
I usually put the new plug into the socket on the end of the ratchet extension with the ratchet handle off to get it started. It makes it easier to find/reach the plug seat and to get the plug started. DO NOT CROSS THREAD A PLUG! If you can, tighten the plugs as tight as you can with just your fingers. Then tighten them with the socket so they're tight, but not TOO tight. ( I know, I know. It's a "feel")
It also can't hurt to pick up a little tube of dielectric grease to put on
the other end of the plugs where the plug wire goes. This helps to keep a clean,
watertight connection.
Repeat this process 3 more times. You might just wonder at how much better
your Sunfire runs with new plugs!
If the plug wires look cracked, frayed or broken, replace
them at the same time. New plugs + crappy wires = not much improvement. If you change the plug wires, the same rule as above applies. ONE AT A TIME!. If you don't obey this rule, and mix up the wires, your car will run like crap, or maybe not at all. This really is important
