It is one of the largest and most widespread crocodile species in Africa, commonly found in freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and swamps. There is also the Pygmy Freshwater Crocodile found usually in the escarpment areas of Arnhem Land, but tests indicate that it is the same species as the Freshwater Crocodile.
