An atom consists of a nucleus surronded by one or more electrons. The nucleus is the tiny, central core of an atom. It contains particles called protons an neutrons. Protons have a positive electric charge, which is indicated by a plus symbol. Neutrons have no charge, they are neutral. A third type of particle moves in the space around the outside of the nucleus. These particles are called electrons, which move rapidly in all directions. Elctrons carry a negative charge, which is indicated by a negative symbol. The protons and electrons in an atom have opposite charges. But, an atom is neutral because it contains equal numbers of protons and electrons.

The three basic parts of an atom are the protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus while the electrons exist outside the nucleus. It was believed at one point that the electrons fall into clearly defined orbits, but the common theory is that they exist in probability clouds around the nucleus.

There are lots of different parts of atoms, but the ones that really define what the atom is are protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons are in the nucleus, and the electrons outside it. The number of protons tells us what the element is for the atom, and the number of neutrons tells us the isotope. If the atom is not ionized and not part of a chemical compound, the number of electrons is the same as the number of protons. Electrons are shared among atoms in chemical compounds to some extent, however.
