The human body has five types of bones.
1. LONG BONES: Longer than they are wide, having growth areas at each end, hard outside and spongy inside and containing marrow. Examples - the main bones in the arms and legs.
2. SHORT BONES: As wide as they are long (i.e. cube shaped), have only a thin layer of hard bone, a relatively large amount of marrow inside. They provide stability, but do not move very much. Examples - The Carpals and Tarsals in the wristand foot.
3. FLAT BONES: Examples - shoulder blade, breast bone, cranium, pelvis, sternum.
4. IRREGULAR BONES: Examples - spine, lower jaw bone.
5. SESAMOID BONES: There are within tendons. Example - knee cap (patella).
