The public want more information
I am curious about my family tree and want to research more about my mother's ancestry. Where can I find public records at no cost?
The Public Records website is a great online resource for performing a free public records search. You can search for obituaries, land use documents, and many more public records.
You will be able to find public records at your local city hall, court house or government agency. Now days each government agency are making more of their public records available online. Each agency may have their own website that can allow users search different topics ranging from sex offenders, property records, business licenses and court dockets. Every agency has a different policy on what type of public records are available online.
You can find them online, but what type of public records are you looking for? Public records are commonly used to find information about people (as in a people search), learn more about someone's past (as in a background check), get specific data about a company or business professional, obtain various records (birth, death, marriage, divorce, etc.) and to see the value and related information for any piece of property. Depending on the type of public records you want to find, you can try a Google search. Enter the search terms (for example, if you want to find a person you can enter "people search" or "people finders", if you want information about a piece of real estate you could enter "property records", etc.) and you should be able to find what you need.

The first thing you have to do is to learn that a particular ancestor existed. Then you can, perhaps, learn more about them. To find out that someone you did not know existed, you look at the records of the people you do know about. If you know about your grandparents, you look at their birth records, for example, to find out the names of their parents. Then you have new people to learn about.
Access of public records vary by country, but at least for the US, public information is relatively easy to find. For basic information like phone number, name and address, the website Zabasearch.com works quite well. For more detailed documents like wedding, birth, and death certificates, the website Vitalrec.com instructs people on how to get the documents from relevant government offices.

Criminal records are a matter of Public Record and can be accessed through the individual courts where conviction was made. If the individual in question was in the custody of the state's Department of Corrections (prison), then each state maintains record of all inmates, and these records are often available on line. Military records are more private. The public may access some information, but most information is held confidential and is available only to the service member and the immediate family of deceased service members.
