Well, I would recommend using AVG because they offer good protection and a variety of services. They also offer their services and products for an incredibly reasonable price.

Free antivirus software can be obtained through the AVG website. Their free version does not have all the same features as the full version but it does a good job of protecting your computer.

I do not think this will be of use in the long run. Antivirus software is commonly updated via webupdates, which can be tens of megabytes. If you prefer not to download the software, then how will you be updating the antivirus software.
