You should test your pool weekly at the very least and if there has been lots of rain or after a pool party. Liquid testing kits, strip testers, and digital testing kits are the main ways to test your pool water. You should test for total and free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, cyanuric acid, calcium hardness, phosphates, copper, and salt if you have a saltwater pool.

How can you test pool salt level?
Testing strips are easier to use and read, however drops are more accurate and can alert you to certain issues with your water quickly, like high chlorine interfering with the pH test, and allow a tester to correct for the issue. (Often you will have a reagent called thiosulfate. If your chlorine is off the chart, and your pH reads high, then redo the pH test, adding two drops of thiosulfate before the pH chemical. This will neutralize the high chlorine.) The other plus with drops is that you don't need to test everything if you don't want to, but you can if you need to. If you just need to see what your pH is, then you don't need to waste a whole test strip. Kids like to watch the water turn colors, also ;)
Why wouldn't you be able to get a cl reading if your pool is sparkling clear?
clear water does not equal chlorine. a well ballanced pool with proper PH, cl2, ALCALLINITY and HARDNESS will accualy have a light blue tinge to it. a proper test kit that checks free, total and combined CL2 WOULD BE A GOOD INVESTMENT OVER A STRIP TEST.
