RFK visited Terre Haute on April 3 and May 3 of 1968. I have heard local political leaders state that he returned because man Indiana State University students were away on spring break at the time of his first visit. At the time of his second visit, I was parking cars for my uncle after school on a lot he owned in the heart of the city. I did so even though I didn't yet have a driver's license. On the 3rd of May that year my uncle came to the lot and informed me we would be closing early. A flat bed truck was hauled in across the back of the lot. A crowd began to gather. Bobby and his aids made their way from the Terre Haute House to the truck bed that would serve as his stage. My uncle had placed me right at the stair, allowing me to be there to shake his hand just before he ascended the stairs to speak.

Yes, Bird received a basketball scholarship to Indiana University in 1974. However, he was overwhelmed by the size of the campus and number of students and was not mentally ready for this stage of life. He dropped out of Indiana after 24 days. Bird returned home to French Lick where he enrolled in the nearby Northwood Institute before dropping out and getting a job with the Street Department (the department picked up garbage, repaired roads, removed snow, mowed lawns, etc.) for a year. He played AAU basketball for Hancock Construction and, after that year, decided to enroll at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
