Working as a paralegal or legal assistant jobs ranks high on lists of lucrative jobs to have. A good paralegal can begin at a very excellent salary, around $45,000 annually. Senior paralegals will earn about a third more. Legal assistants are also highly regarded and important staff members in legal firms and corporations. They get paid almost as much as the certified paralegals.

The first step towards finding paralegal and legal assistant jobs is to obtain the required training. There are courses in Paralegal Studies that can be completed by mail or in a classroom situation. The training covers basic legal office procedures, forms, and types of law specialties. Some additional training in one or more of the specialties is also recommended. As long as the student has completed the training, finding a job in as a paralegal will be much easier.

Some law firms will train their paralegals on the job. Most states have no specific requirements for persons who wish to become a paralegal or legal assistant. The basic difference between these workers and the lawyers they work with is that the attorneys are allowed to set fees, draft legal documents, represent clients in court and give legal advice. Their assistants and paralegals do the footwork after the lawyer has made decisions about what to do. This may include research, taking depositions, legal case management and everyday tasks.

Certification by passing a course of study or an exam for certification or licensing will help these workers find a job, but there is no official requirement to become a paralegal or legal assistant. Training can, however, greatly improve the chances for obtaining a job in this career.

Law firms bill a lesser amount for paralegal and legal assistant time than they do for attorney time. This can benefit the client by reducing the bill, and it frees up the attorneys to do the jobs that only they are allowed to do. Many paralegals have attended law school and are very knowledgeable about the law.

Finding a job as a paralegal or legal assistant is well worth the time spent for education needed to work in this high paying career.
