Cottonclouds and knitmap are two good sources for information. Annies catalog is a store that has information as well. Yarn Market is a yarn superstore.
If you had a length of cotton yarn and a length of viscose (or rayon, is another word for viscose), yarn and you were attempting to differentiate between the two, it is tricky. I would suggest that you wet both strands of yarn, and pull them. The rayon will stretch more and be less strong than the cotton. The rayon will also absorb more water than the cotton yarn.
Generally, cotton wool is not spun into yarn per se.Cotton is cleaned then either fabricated into cotton wool or into cotton yarn. Cotton yarn is used in making jerseys.
Depends on the yarn. There is yarn that is 100% cotton, but cotton/rayon mixes and other mixes are common.
Yarn can be spun from 100% cotton, or may be added to other yarns in whatever ratio is useful for the use of the yarn.
Melange means mixture. The yarn is made of two or more different fibres, e.g. polyester and cotton.
where the cotton percentage is more than 50% in the yarn (cotton polyester) than it is termed as cotton polyester and where the polyester percentage is more than 50% in the yarn ( polyester cotton) it is termed as polyester cotton.

I think you are asking about Sport weight yarn. Yarn can be divided into "weights" which refer to the diameter of the yarn. Yarn Council of America is attempting to standardize this system of weights (which really doesn't have to do with the actual ounces, pounds, grams or kilograms). Therefore, a Sport-weight yarn would be one that could be called "Fine" (vs a lace or superbulky yarn), or #2-sized yarn or that it generally has 23-26 stitches per 4 inches (a standard gauge length and height), horizontally. You can find more information by following the link I have attached to this answer.
Denim is fabricated from cotton twill yarn.
