This questions has MANY answers! It depends on the horsepower gains you prefer, vehicle use, the amount of money you want to spend. In stock trim a 1984-87 300zx has a T-3 Garrett turbo, while the 1988-89 came with (I think) a T-25 or T-28 turbo. Alot of people in the "Z" community upsize to a hybrid or a T3/T4 turbo. The benefit primarily is it maintains the stock bolt pattern, but more importantly it allows higher boost due to the larger T-4 compression side of the turbo. It has the low rpm spool capability of the T-3 but higher boost aspect of T-4 turbo. Beyond this may require custom manifold fabrication and mounting bracket to except a larger turbo. I have seen Z31 Series 300zx (1984-1989),making close to 500hp on similar T3/T4 upgraded turbo. Call any reputable turbo shop, they should be able to convert you stock turbo to upgrade form.
