Like all dogs, cocker spaniels can be purchased through a pet store. Many people believe that supporting a pet store allows pet stores to continue to buy pets from farms and places with poor living conditions. One rewarding way to buy a dog is to adopt one through the SPCA or a nearby shelter.

Purebred Cocker Spaniel puppies should only be purchased from respectable, quality breeders. The puppies should be AKC registered and should be checked by a veterinarian to be sure it is in good health. It would be a good idea, before buying a puppy from any breeder, to ask for and check out references from previous buyers.

Do cocker spaniels swim?

95% of dogs can swim. Cocker spaniels do swim but were naturally bred to hunt birds and small mammal's. Sometimes, if there is a duck in the water the cocker spaniel will leap and do whatever it takes to get that prey. So if you have a cocker spaniel and you find it attacking a bird in the backyard or trying to catch a squirrel this is perfectly normal.

Owners may find that these dogs are difficult to housebreak, and often barking can be a problem. These dogs are affectionate, which is great news for those looking for a devoted pet, but the Cocker Spaniel can sometimes get a little over dedicated and clingy, which makes him something of a demanding pet, and certainly not ideal for those that cannot dedicate the time to look after a pet and pay it plenty of attention. Also, during grooming sessions you should check the ear canals to ensure that they are clean and dry. The life expectancy of the Cocker Spaniel is around 10-14 years, and there are a number of health problems that are linked to this breed. This includes PRS. The Cocker Spaniel is though to originate from Spanish blood, and this breed was registered with the AKC in 1878.

The Cocker Spaniel Might Be The Dog For You?

If you’re interested in bringing a dog into your life, the cocker spaniel might be the dog of your dreams. This sturdy pooch is mid-sized and ready to work at any available opportunity. They’re of moderate intelligence, but most noticeable about them is their unbelievably sweet disposition. Few people can resist taking home a cocker spaniel that has looked them directly in the eyes. They practically beg you to be their owner and give them dog food. Be warned, though: This is a dog that needs to get its exercise. If you don’t exercise your cocker spaniel enough, its behavior will go from sweet to troublesome. Excessive barking is a sure sign that your cocker spaniel needs to get more exercise and less rest-time. The American cocker spaniels that we know and love are descended from 14th century English cocker spaniels. Chances are that 14th century English cocker spaniels were also 15-30 pounds, just like today’s American cocker spaniels. They were used to for bird hunting and some spaniels today are used for that reason also. They are excellent bird dogs. Your dog needs more than just exercise. It will need a mix of exercise, affection, and rest in order to live its life to the fullest. Make sure to take your cocker spaniel for regular visits to the vet. Cataracts and hip dysplasia are common medical conditions found in the breed. One of the biggest decisions facing you will be where to buy the cocker spaniel. They’re available at pet stores but you can find them at animal shelters as well. Mixed breeds will have some of the traits of the spaniel as well. Wherever you buy your dog, make sure that it didn’t come from a puppy mill. Buying a shelter dog is one of the ways to rule out that the dog was the product of a puppy mill. No one operates a puppy mill and then gives the pups away for free. When you bring your new cocker spaniel home, you’ll have a faithful friend for life. Read a lot of literature about training your new dog and be the leader that it needs in order to be a happy canine.

How much do cocker spaniels cost?

Cocker Spaniels can sell for all different prices, it really depends on the dog and if we are in a financial crises. Most Cocker Spaniel puppies would cost around $400. It really depends on the breeder - a well-bred puppy from fully health tested parents will cost more than a puppy that has no recorded history and no proof it was bred for perfect health and temperament.
