Choosing a Wine Rack For a Small Wine Collection?
Wine has long had a reputation of being a drink for the wealthy and cultured, but in recent years, lower-priced wines have begun enticing new consumers to try them. Suddenly, people without wine knowledge find themselves needing to store small wine collections. It may be tempting to save money by keeping wine in your pantry or on the counter, but wine racks serve a function other than decoration. If you don't store your wine properly, you may find yourself with undrinkable bottles and wasted money. A wine rack is designed to hold wine bottles at the optimum angle to keep the wine cork wet. This is important so oxygen doesn't get into the wine bottle, causing the alcohol to evaporate. There's no reason to buy an expensive, temperature-controlled wine cupboard, though, if you're only storing a few bottles at a time and drinking them regularly. Put some thought into how much wine you'll be storing at a time before you buy a wine rack. If you buy one with many more slots than you need, you'll not only be wasting money on a more expensive wine rack than necessary, you may waste money on buying more wine than you otherwise would, simply to fill the slots. For most new collectors, a table-top wine rack with six to eight slots should be plenty. Make sure to find one that matches your decor, because it will be on display. Think, too, about finding a wine rack that matches your wine style. If you buy a lot of deep red wines, you may want to look for a wine rack made of dark wood. If your wine style tends to be more light and fruity, you may prefer a metal wine rack with whimsical touches, such as sculpted grapes.
