In any war, there are competing narratives, as both sides try to tell the story their way. For example, the British and Anglo-Canadian narrative, expressed in folks songs such as "Brave Wolfe" (about the courage of Major General James Wolfe at the Battle of Quebec in 1759) focused on how the British forces defeated the Marquis de Montcalm and his French troops. Both Wolfe and Montcalm died in the fierce battle on the Plains of Abraham in Canada, and since the British won the war, the British narrative became the dominant one. However, the French remembered Montcalm as a great military commander, and although he lost the battle, French narratives stressed his heroism and his willingness to die to defend New France.
