The earthquakes have not changed. But people have built more buildings as well as buildings that are more expensive in areas where earthquakes are common. Also better communication allows more people to become aware of damage from more earthquakes than they would have been aware of before, so it appears to people that more damage is happening than it would appear before even when the actual damage is identical. Remember the more people hurt in an event the more today's news services want to cover it.
