Someone can find a place to repair a VCR at many computer shops or shops that still sell VCRs, such as HMV or RadioShack. Older videos stores usually are able to provide repairs.
Most chain stores stopped repairing VCR's, you will have to go to a specialty electronic repair store.
Actually electronics VCR are not commonly used any more, but it's still possible to find information on them. A good place for example would be "HowStuffWorks" (here one has to check the dedicated "VCR" page in section "Electronics").

Most remotes will also work for VCR's, but you'll have to find the remote code for your VCR first.
If the damage is fairly minimal and it can stay in the same place and shape it was originally, it should have no problem playing without having to repair it, though the tape may become tangled in the VCR due to age and wear.
