Since pianos are costly items that people usually keep for a long time, this is a little like going to a car dealership; you can expect the dealer to want to sell you the best (most expensive) piano in the showroom. (Most regular moving companies have the equipment and experience to do this.) Also, moving a piano tends to put it out of tune, so you will probably want to have it tuned after it has had a chance to settle in. If you buy from a dealer, these services can probably be incorporated into the purchase.

A good resource for advice is the music department at your nearest high school or college. They can probably recommend local dealers, teachers, and tuners who can help you out. You might also look at www.ptg.org, the Piano Tuners Guild. Piano tuners often know where used pianos are available, and can help you evaluate a piano you are considering buying (just like having a mechanic check out a used car before you buy).
