Improvement from someone's answer above, this answer also meets the additional condition (if required) that "the wine and barrels must be split so that each son has the same # of full barrels, same # of half-full barrels and same # of empty barrels." Give each son 2 each, so there are 1 full, 1 half-full and 1 empty left. Take the full one, pour half into the empty one, finally, there will be 3 half-full barels, give 1 to each son. voila! In the requirement, it's also mentioned that "there are no measuring devices handy". So my method above assumes that we can pour the full barrel into the empty one and make the 2 even using our eyes for adjustment.
