Lake-effect snow clouds form when cold air moves over a relatively warmer body of water, such as a lake. The warm water heats the air above it, causing it to rise and pick up moisture. As this moist, warm air moves over the colder land, it cools and condenses, forming clouds. When these clouds become saturated, they release snow, particularly in areas downwind of the lake.
