When changing or replacing parts of a stereo it is important to have a diagram. In a 1998 Toyota Avalon the wiring diagram for the stereo is found in it manual.

I had the same thing in my 1995 Avalon XLS with the CD player. In order to plug anything in you either have to use the cassette player adapter or simply get a new receiver (stereo) for your car.
There are 4 Generations of Avalons and close to ten types of stereos. More information is needed to provide an answer.

I have an 08' Trundra Grade (base model) and it does have the connection.
Remove the retaining cover from your factory stereo. Remove the factory stereo retaining bolts. Slide the factory stereo out. Remove the wiring harness and the antenna cable from the back of the factory stereo.
Probably blew a fuse, that's what just happened to me. Look up how to replace them in your manual, its pretty easy.
Remove the 2002 Dodge Durango factory stereo decorative cover. Remove the factory stereo retaining screws. Pull the factory stereo out. Remove the wiring harness and the antenna cable from the back of the stereo.
