### How do you find the volume of a potato?

find a jug just wide enough to fit the whole potato. Find a
measuring jug that the jug fits into. Fill the first jug with water
and put it into the empty measuring jug. Place the potato into the
full jug. Let the water spill into the measuring jug. Take the
first jug out and the amount of water that spilled out is equal to
the volume of the potato. This is called displacement and was
devised by Archimedes.

jug Fill the 5 gallon jug up with water Now you have a full 5

gallon jug with water from the 5 gallon jug Now you have 4 gallons
of water in the 5 gallon jug and a full 3 gallon jug empty the 3

###### Asked in Volume

### How can you get 6 quarts of water from a 4 quart jug and a 9 quart jug?

Fill up the 9 qt. jug. Fill up the 4 qt jug using water from the
9 qt. jug. That will leave 5 qts. in the 9 qt. jug. Dump out the
water in the 4 qt jug and fill it again with the water that remains
in the 9 qt jug. Now you have just one qt. in the 9 qt jug. (9 - 4
= 5. 5 - 4 = 1) Dump out the water in the 4 qt jug again. Pour the
remaining 1 qt from the 9 qt jug into the 4 qt jug. Now you have 1
qt of water in the 4 qt jug leaving room for 3 more quarts. Fill up
the 9 qt jug again and then pour it into the 4 qt jug until it is
full. Now you have 6 qts in the 9 qt jug.

###### Asked in Milk

### Which is the best estimate for the capacity of jug of milk?

There are several ways you could determine the capacity of a
milk jug:
1: Fill the milk jug with water and then transfer the water to a
graduated measuring jug
2: take a bottle of known volume such as a soda bottle. Fill the
soda bottle and transfer its contents to the milk jug to get its
approximate capacity
3: weigh the empty milk jug and make a note of the weight. Then,
fill the milk jug with water. 1 cubic cm of water weighs 1 gram.
Deduct the weight of the empty jug from the weight of the full jug
to give the weight of the water inside. If, for example, the water
weighs approximately 1000 grams then you have a 1 litre milk
jug
