If it's after about 200,000 it's after 1920 and it's date stamped on the barrel. Check the Remington Society of America on the manufactured data page. If it's before 1921 I need a serial number and I can look it up but only the year.
If information has been published on the company, buy the book(s). Try Proofhouse.com.
You should be able to contact Winchester and see if you may find the year of production by serial number thru there archives. If not I do have the manufacture dates of the first 250,000 made. You will need to have your serial number available to research the date of manufacture.
If you provide the serial number in your question then I can give you the date of manufacture.
